Ousted Guinea-Bissau President Arrives in Senegal

28 November

Deposed Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has arrived in Senegal, according to Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang.

"The Senegalese government sent a plane to Bissau which returned to Dakar with Sissoco Embaló on board," the minister confirmed to Seneweb portal, noting the former president is safe and unharmed. The specific circumstances and conditions of his departure remain undisclosed.

The military seized power in Guinea-Bissau on November 26 through a coup d'état, ousting President Embaló who was initially detained in his office at the presidential palace before being held at the army headquarters. His immediate and unconditional release had been demanded by the African Union, other regional organizations, and numerous African nations.

Embaló had been participating in November 23 presidential elections seeking a second term when the military halted vote counting. The electoral commission had been scheduled to announce results on November 28.

The military junta has declared all state authority transferred to the "Higher Military Command for Order Restoration," headed by Major General Horta Inta-a who was sworn in as transitional president of Guinea-Bissau on November 27.
