Pakistan Gears Up for Second Wave of Afghan Migrant Deportations

25 March

Media reports indicate that Pakistani authorities are making preparations for the commencement of the second phase of deportations, aiming to repatriate approximately 1 million Afghan migrants back to Afghanistan, the Dawn newspaper reports.

According to the newspaper, local authorities and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to accelerate the process of compiling a list of Afghan citizen card (ACC) holders residing in Pakistan. This process is anticipated to be finalized by April 30. The repatriation of Afghans holding ACCs could be initiated by government decree in early or mid-summer, as per the publication.

Pakistan initiated the first phase of deportations of so-called undocumented foreigners in November 2023. Since then, it's estimated that over 800,000 Afghan nationals have departed from the country.
