Citizens of Sudan should sort out the situation in the state on their own, but Russia would like it to return to constitutional order as soon as possible, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.
"We would like to see a speedy return of the situation in the country to the constitutional mainstream. We, of course, call for restraint on all sides," the Kremlin spokesman said. "The Sudanese themselves must sort out the situation in the country. We wish this to happen as soon as possible and without any loss of human life," he added.
The Russian leader's spokesman added that Moscow is concerned about developments in the state. "Sudan is very important to us in terms of the development of our relations in a variety of areas. We are watching very closely what is happening there," Peskov noted.
After weeks of protests, the Sudanese military on Monday night arrested the country's prime minister Abdallah Hamdok, as well as a number of top officials and prominent politicians. The leader of the state, general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dissolved the highest authorities and declared a state of emergency as the army's "response to the youth revolution". He also suspended several articles of the constitutional declaration which had provided the framework for the country's transition after the overthrow of president Omar al-Bashir's 30-year rule and the relationship between the military and civilian authorities.
