Peskov Thanks Azerbaijan for Assisting in Evacuation of Russians from Iran

17 June

Russians are being evacuated from Iran via a border crossing with Azerbaijan, and Moscow is deeply grateful to Baku for providing favorable conditions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“The main evacuation route is through the checkpoint on the Azerbaijani border. Our Azerbaijani friends are offering favorable conditions, and we’re very thankful for that,” Peskov said in response to a question about how many Russian nationals remain in Iran and how many wish to leave.

He emphasized that efforts to coordinate and carry out the evacuations are ongoing around the clock. “The embassy has a clear record of all citizens under its care, knows how many are seeking evacuation, and is keeping a close eye on their safety to ensure they’re not in harm’s way,” Peskov added.

According to the Russian Embassy in Tehran, at least 313 Russians were evacuated from Iran to Azerbaijan on June 14–15. On June 14, 88 people were evacuated, including a film crew led by Fyodor Bondarchuk. On June 15, another 225 people were evacuated, among them children. The evacuees included family members of diplomatic staff, musicians from the Tchaikovsky Grand Symphony Orchestra, and other Russian citizens.
