Russia assumes that any strikes on the territory of Syria do not contribute to stability in the Middle East, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy said at a press conference on Tuesday, responding to a question about an Israeli air force strike on the seaport of Latakia.
"We do not believe that any situation of this kind contributes to stability in the Middle East as well as in Syria," he commented, noting the need to investigate what happened.
Earlier Tuesday, Syrian state TV reported that Syrian air defense units repelled Israeli airstrikes on the outskirts of a port in Syria's Latakia province. The TV channel's footage shows an extensive fire at a site with cargo containers. According to the channel, the missile strikes were carried out by Israel from the airspace over the Mediterranean Sea.
The port of Latakia is 15 kilometers from the Russian air force base in Khmeimim and is Syria's sea gateway. Through it, essential goods and food arrive in the country.
