Primakov Reports Growing Interest in Russian Language Studies in Iran

17 February

Iranians are showing a surge of interest in learning the Russian language, Yevgeny Primakov, the head of Rossotrudnichestvo, said during the official opening ceremony of the Russian House in Tehran.

"There is an undeniable demand from the Iranian side for the study of the Russian language and culture," Primakov stated. "Rossotrudnichestvo is currently selecting Iranian students for admission to Russian universities under the Russian government's scholarship quota. This year, we are selecting 310 people. It is a significant number, and the competition is very high – roughly three applicants per seat."

The new Russian House in Tehran is set to host Russian language classrooms, an art studio, music and dance clubs, a cinema for film screenings, and a history club.

"Our work is focused not only on the great Russian cultural tradition but also on the future. We intend to open a Russian engineering school here, offering courses in robotics and programming. Russia is about progress and the future, not just a great past and present. There is already a massive demand for this here," he added.

Moscow and Tehran signed an intergovernmental agreement to establish cultural centers in both Russia and Iran in 2021.
