Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his gratitude to Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for fostering the use of the Russian language in Kazakhstan and promoting it as a tool for intergovernmental and intercultural communication.
“We deeply appreciate the careful attention of Kazakhstan's leadership, and of Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich personally, to the Russian language, as well as the significant initiative to establish the International Organization for the Russian Language. This effort will contribute to its promotion as a means of interstate and interethnic communication,” Putin wrote in an article published in Kazakhstanskaya Pravda on the day his state visit to Astana began.
Putin highlighted Russia's support for building new Russian-language schools in Kazakhstan and improving the quality of Russian-language education. He noted plans for three additional schools to open soon in Kyzylorda, Taraz, and Turkestan.
The Russian president also referenced the upcoming opening of a branch of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in Astana, scheduled for September 1, 2025. Tokayev himself is an alumnus of MGIMO. Preparations for academic programs are currently underway, according to the university’s rector, Anatoly Torkunov.
Putin further emphasized the strong educational ties between the two nations, noting that approximately 60,000 Kazakh students are currently enrolled in Russian universities.
