Russian President Vladimir Putin will host Malaysia’s Supreme Ruler, Sultan Ibrahim, at the Kremlin as part of the monarch’s official visit to Moscow. According to a Kremlin press release, their talks will focus on further developing Russia-Malaysia relations and will address key regional and global issues.
The Malaysian king, who arrived in Russia a day earlier, will remain in the country until August 10. His visit carries the highest protocol status—a state visit—and, aside from Moscow, he is expected to visit Kazan as well.
This is the first official trip by Malaysia’s head of state to Russia since diplomatic relations were established with the USSR in 1967. The invitation to Sultan Ibrahim was personally extended by President Putin, who disclosed the plan in May during a visit to Moscow by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In Kuala Lumpur, the state visit was described as opening a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted the monarch’s role in strengthening Malaysia’s international standing and underlined Malaysia’s interest in Russian investments across the energy, space, defense and agricultural sectors.
