Raisi: Troika countries agree that US should leave Syria

Russia, Turkey and Iran have agreed that US forces must leave Syria, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday following a meeting of the Astana troika heads of state on the Syrian settlement, which was held the day before in Tehran.


"The parties agreed that <...> US forces should withdraw from the Euphrates region," he said. "The parties [to the Astana format] will continue to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Syria," the president added.


The Astana format has shown its effectiveness, the work under this format will continue, Raisi said.


"The Astana format has proven its effectiveness. This process must be continued," he said. According to the president, Russia, Turkey and Iran agreed that US forces should leave Syrian territory. "The parties agreed that <...> US forces should withdraw from the Euphrates region," he said.


Raisi also noted that "Syrian refugees should return home as soon as possible." "The parties [to the Astana format] will continue to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Syria," the president added.


Moscow and Tehran, along with Ankara, are guarantors of the Astana process to normalize the situation in Syria. The operation of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria started on September 30, 2015.
