Rosatom is considering the UAE's participation in the creation of an international container transit route on the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Alexei Likhachev, General Director of the Rosatom state corporation, said this on Wednesday in an interview with the Rossiya-24 TV channel.
"International transit [along the NSR] - there is interest. China is interested, India is interested. The Arab Emirates are investing in this project. Together with them we are now entering into agreements to create an international transit container route [on the NSR]," said Likhachev. As the head of the industry noted, such a container route requires logistics hubs, transshipments to ice-class ships. "This is a big good international business. And we will certainly compete with the Suez Canal," the general director of Rosatom assured.
In accordance with the law, Rosatom is an infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route and is authorized to provide centralized management of the NSR, including the provision of icebreaker escort for ships and guidance on the routes of navigation in the waters of the Northern Sea Route. In addition, under the jurisdiction of the state corporation development of shipping routes and the implementation of arrangement of the icebreaker fleet in the waters of the NSR with hydrometeorological, ice and navigational conditions, monitoring of vessel traffic. The powers of Rosatom also include issuing, suspending, renewing and terminating permits for navigation of vessels on the NSR and amending such permits.
