Rosatom's engineering division and South Korea's KHNP signed a contract on Egypt's El Dabaa NPP

25 August 2022

The engineering division of state corporation Rosatom - Atomstroyexport JSC (ASE JSC) - signed a contract with a South Korean firm Korea Hydro & Newclear Power (KHNP) on Thursday for the construction of turbine island facilities of power units of nuclear power plant "El Dabaa", which is being built on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. This was reported by a TASS correspondent from the scene.

The ceremony was held at a hotel in the Egyptian capital. On the Russian side, the document was signed by Anatoly Kovtunov, Director of the NPP construction in ARE, Director of the ASE branch, and on the Korean side - by KHNP Vice President.

"KHNP has joined our friendly and well-coordinated team," Alexander Korchagin, Senior Vice President for Nuclear Construction Project Management of ASE JSC, said during the signing ceremony. He expressed confidence that the success in realization of El Dabaa NPP project will be achieved due to "well-coordinated joint work of Russian, Egyptian and Korean teams".

As explained at a press conference, the contract involves a South Korean company in the construction and equipping of a special area on which the turbine hall (the main building where the turbine is located) and auxiliary buildings are located. The South Korean side will be involved in equipping the sites for all four NPP power units. A total of 44 auxiliary buildings are expected to be built.

Korchagin, answering a TASS correspondent's question about the deadline for the commissioning of the facility, noted that there are no prerequisites for "delays in the commissioning of the nuclear power plant in due time. "The production, technological, organizational pace we have to maintain, all necessary and sufficient resources are provided for this," said the senior vice president of ASE JSC.

KHNP is a subsidiary of Korea Energy Company, which is in charge of managing South Korea's nuclear and major hydroelectric power plants.

Rosatom in Egypt

On July 20, Rosatom began construction of the El Dabaa nuclear power plant. This is Egypt's first nuclear power plant and Rosatom's first major project in Africa.

The NPP will be built by Rosatom 3.5 km from the Mediterranean Sea in the town of Dabaa in Matrouh Province. By 2028 Russia will build four blocks of the plant with VVER-1200 reactors and will supply nuclear fuel during the whole life cycle of the NPP (60 years) as well as provide services on personnel training and maintenance and repair within 10 years after each block commissioning. The contract also provides for the construction of the first module of dry container storage of spent nuclear fuel by 2028. Egypt expects the NPP to reach full capacity by 2030.
