The Kazakhstan ruling party "Amanat" ("Ancestral will") will support the candidacy of the current head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev if he decides to participate in the upcoming early presidential elections. Yerlan Koshanov, chairman of the party and speaker of the Majilis (lower house) of Kazakhstan's parliament, told reporters on Wednesday.
"A presidential candidate is nominated by a public association or a political party. "Amanat" will support the head of state, and the president himself will say who will nominate him, whether [he] agrees or not," Koshanov said. During his September 1 address to the nation, Tokayev announced that extraordinary presidential elections will be held this fall and early elections to the Majilis and maslikhats (local representative bodies) - in the first half of 2023.
The head of state also proposed limiting the presidential term to one seven-year term instead of the current two five-year terms. He said that after the elections he would submit a relevant initiative to parliament for consideration. The next presidential election was supposed to be held in Kazakhstan in 2024.
On the same day, Koshanov said that the "Amanat" party as the leading political force of Kazakhstan fully supports the political and socio-economic initiatives of the head of state.
