RUSAL is ready to evacuate its Russian personnel from Guinea in case of further escalation of political instability in the country, the company said.
"In case of further escalation of political instability, the company is ready to evacuate its Russian personnel from the republic. RUSAL is currently working closely with the Russian embassy in Guinea," the company said.
"In connection with the events taking place in the Republic of Guinea, Rusal reports that the company is currently focused on ensuring the safety of its employees, maintaining the safety and continuity of production processes," the statement said.
In Guinea, RUSAL owns the Kindia Bauxite Company (KBC) as well as the Friguia bauxite and alumina complex. In addition, the company is implementing a project to develop the world's largest bauxite deposit Dian-Dian in the Boke region.
Earlier, Guinea's rebel leader Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya assured foreign investors and partners that the country's new authorities would honor their commitments and urged mining companies to continue their operations.
On September 5, Doumbouya, commander of Guinea's elite Special Forces unit, announced the detention of 83-year-old President Alpha Condé, who has led the country since 2010. The rebels formed a National Cohesion and Development Committee, dissolved the government, appointed military governors, and imposed a curfew. Key countries around the world, including Russia, condemned the unconstitutional actions of the military, calling for Condé's release and a negotiated settlement.
