Pakistan, Russia and China have voiced their opposition to European countries’ attempts to trigger the automatic reinstatement mechanism for UN Security Council sanctions against Iran. This was announced by Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran.
“Several countries that adopted the Tianjin Declaration of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit—which condemns the attacks by Israel and the US on Iran—are members of the UN Security Council. China and Russia are permanent members, and Pakistan is a non-permanent member of the Security Council. Understandably, we share their stance. All three countries are against the snapback mechanism and the restoration of the Security Council sanctions that were lifted under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the diplomat told IRNA.
Gharibabadi described a key point in the Tianjin summit declaration—where SCO leaders condemned Israeli and US aggression against Iran—as strong and highly significant.
Earlier, the E3 countries (the United Kingdom, Germany, France) declared their intention to activate the snapback mechanism, which would reimpose UN Security Council sanctions on Tehran that were lifted following the 2015 agreement. This would happen if Iran does not agree to a new nuclear deal that requires complete elimination of uranium enrichment.
Iranian authorities have rejected this demand and warned they may withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons if sanctions are reinstated.
The European countries will be able to activate the mechanism on October 18, upon expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which legally endorses the JCPOA related to Iran’s nuclear program.
