Moscow has strongly condemned the horrific terrorist attack that took place during Sunday worship at the Church of the Prophet Elijah in Damascus. The statement came from Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
“We firmly denounce this monstrous act of terrorism, which claimed the lives of innocent civilians,” she said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”
Zakharova expressed Russia’s solidarity with the Syrian people in the face of this tragedy. She emphasized Moscow’s support for the Syrian authorities' intention to carry out a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
“This brutal attack was clearly aimed at destabilizing the situation in Syria and undermining efforts to restore peace and civil order,” she said. “We hope the perpetrators will be held fully accountable.”
She also stressed that, during Syria’s ongoing transitional phase, it is critically important to promote national reconciliation and prevent terrorists from fueling sectarian hatred or unrest within Syrian society.
“Russia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and we remain ready to assist in efforts to achieve lasting stability in the country,” Zakharova concluded.
