Russia, Egypt consider it necessary to restart Palestinian-Israeli talks — Lavrov

31 January 2023

Russia and Egypt have confirmed the need to restart talks between Palestine and Israel, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday at a press conference following talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

"We are deeply concerned about the negative dynamics of the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone. Both sides confirmed the need for an early restart of the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations in order to resolve key final status issues and achieve a comprehensive settlement based on the universally recognized international legal framework," the Russian foreign minister said.

"In this regard, the Russian side reiterated the need for an early resumption of the work of the quartet of international mediators and recalled that for many years we have considered it necessary to find an opportunity for this organization - the quartet of international mediators, let me remind you that these are the US, Russia, the UN and the European Union - to work in close coordination with any of the Arab states," Lavrov noted.

"So far, unfortunately, there has been no progress in this direction," he said.
