Russia Halts Work on UN Security Council Document on Central Asia

23 July

Russia has suspended its efforts to draft a UN Security Council press statement on the activities of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), citing as a hostile Western attitude toward multilateral cooperation formats in the region.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow would nevertheless continue to advocate for a professional, depoliticized dialogue between the UN and regional intergovernmental bodies.

“Due to the openly hostile approach of Western members to constructive multilateral interaction in the region, the Russian delegation was forced to suspend work on the text,” she said, commenting on the stalled negotiations.

Zakharova stressed that Russia remains committed to deepening cooperation between the UN and organizations such as the CSTO, CIS, and SCO — which play a key role in maintaining regional security. She noted that the draft statement Russia proposed during July consultations was carefully balanced and aimed at highlighting UNRCCA’s efforts to promote peace and stability in Central Asia.

However, she accused Western members of opposing any mention in the text of the center’s cooperation with those regional bodies, despite such cooperation being explicitly part of UNRCCA’s mandate and regularly reported to the Security Council.

“We intend to continue supporting a truly multipolar international order and to promote depoliticized, professional engagement between the UN and regional organizations,” Zakharova concluded.
