Russia Warns Against UN Security Council Involvement in US-Israel Conflict

22 March

Russia has warned against allowing the United Nations Security Council to be drawn into the "dirty games" of the United States and Israel, particularly concerning the situation in the Gaza Strip. Dmitriy Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, expressed these concerns.

Polyanskiy pointed out that the US draft for the UN Security Council resolution did not actually call for an immediate ceasefire. Instead, it used the phrase "the council determines the imperative of an immediate ceasefire," which, according to him, could be manipulated to suit the interests of Israel and its American ally. This, he argued, could potentially be used to further harm or displace the Palestinians in Gaza.

"Russia will not allow the UN Security Council to be dragged into these dirty games," Polyanskiy emphasized. He also criticized the US draft for focusing on condemning Hamas without addressing Israel's actions in violation of international humanitarian law (IHL) and the loss of life among Palestinians.

Earlier, Russia and China had used their veto power in the UN Security Council to block a draft Middle East resolution submitted by the United States. This resolution called for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire but did not include a corresponding demand or call. Algeria opposed the document, while Guyana abstained. The remaining countries, including the United Kingdom, Malta, Mozambique, the Republic of Korea, Ecuador, France, Japan, Mozambique, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the United States, and the United Kingdom, voted in favor.

Before the vote, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya urged the Security Council members not to support the US-submitted document. He highlighted another draft resolution prepared by non-permanent members of the council, which he believed could be adopted due to its clear call for a ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
