Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen discussed the situation in Syria, including the advancement of the political settlement process in the Arab republic, by phone on Thursday.
"The current situation 'on the ground' in and around Syria was reviewed, with a focus on the promotion of a political settlement process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves with UN assistance without external interference and artificial preconditions, as stipulated in UN Security Council resolution 2254," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry added that the sides also discussed implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2585 on humanitarian assistance to the country's population.
The discussion was held on Pedersen's initiative.
