Russia strongly condemns the terrorist attacks on the UN peacekeepers in Mali, aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country and undermining the collective efforts to counter terrorism in the region. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued Thursday in connection with the incident that occurred the day before.
"Moscow strongly condemns these crimes aimed at destabilizing the situation in Mali and undermining collective efforts to counter the terrorist threat in the region. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," the ministry stressed.
"The terrorist attacks occurred against the backdrop of the recent intensification of attacks by various extremist groups on soldiers and civilians both in Mali and throughout the Sahara-Sahel zone," the diplomatic mission pointed out.
On Wednesday, seven peacekeepers of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali were killed and three others were seriously wounded when a homemade bomb exploded on a road in the central part of the country. On December 6, an Egyptian peacekeeper died in a hospital under similar circumstances in the north of the country from serious wounds.
