Ryabkov and Kazakhstan’s Deputy FM Hold Nuclear Disarmament Talks in Astana

20 February

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and Kazakhstan’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Yerzhan Ashikbayev held bilateral consultations in Astana. The meeting focused on arms control and preparations for upcoming international security forums.

According to the Kazakhstan's ministry of foreign affairs, the diplomats discussed a broad spectrum of pressing global security issues. Their dialogue centered on strengthening the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, ensuring biological security, and addressing export control challenges.

The two sides also coordinated their positions regarding collaboration within multilateral organizations. Key topics included the work of the United Nations General Assembly First Committee, which handles disarmament, and the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the upcoming 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), scheduled to take place in New York later this year.

Kazakhstan joined the NPT as a non-nuclear-weapon state in 1994.
