Seven African presidents are part of a peace mission to find a solution to the Ukrainian crisis, which will visit Kiev and St. Petersburg this coming week. The Brazzaville Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is facilitating the trip, announced the news.
"The Brazzaville Foundation is pleased to announce that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will receive the following heads of state in Kiev on Friday, June 16, and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, June 17, in St. Petersburg: President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Comoros and Chairman of the African Union Azali Assumani, President of the Republic of Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of Senegal Macky Sall, President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is expected to join other African heads of state," the organization said in a communiqué issued Thursday in South Africa.
On May 16, Ramaphosa announced that Russian and Ukrainian authorities had agreed to host an African delegation to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Ramaphosa spoke on behalf of a group of six African countries: Egypt, the Republic of Congo, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia. Now Comoros, the current chair of the African Union, has been added to the list.
The Brazzaville Foundation was founded in the summer of 2014 by French businessman Jean-Yves Olivier, who is its current president. The organization develops initiatives in the field of conflict prevention and resolution. Its headquarters are in London.
