13 September

A suspect accused of inciting religious hatred has been extradited from Russia to Kazakhstan, where he faces up to 10 years in prison, according to a statement from Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office.

“As a result of joint efforts between law enforcement agencies in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation, a Kazakh citizen wanted for inciting religious hatred has been extradited from Russia,” the statement said.

Authorities reported that between 2016 and 2017 in Almaty, the suspect repeatedly engaged in premeditated actions aimed at inciting religious hatred. These actions allegedly included insulting citizens' religious beliefs and promoting the superiority, inferiority, or exclusivity of certain individuals based on their religious views.

The suspect fled Kazakhstan and was placed on an international wanted list. In 2017, he committed a robbery in Moscow and was later convicted by a Russian court. After serving his sentence in Russia, he was returned to Kazakhstan to face criminal charges, according to the Prosecutor General's Office.

If found guilty of the charges, the suspect could face a prison sentence of 5 to 10 years.
