Reaching a security agreement with Israel has become a necessity for Syria, but normalization of relations is not currently being discussed, transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa told journalists in Damascus, as reported by Al Hadath TV.
“Peace and normalization with Israel are not on the agenda at the moment,” al-Sharaa stated. “But if we succeed and agree on security measures, perhaps in the future we may reach other agreements as well.”
Al-Sharaa noted that the United States, acting as mediator, “is not pressuring Damascus to strike a deal with Israel.” He urged Israel “to respect Syria’s territorial integrity and refrain from violating its airspace.”
Previously, Syria TV reported that a third round of negotiations between Syrian Foreign Minister and Minister for Expatriates Asaad al-Shaibani and Israeli Strategic Planning Minister Ron Dermer would begin in London under US sponsorship, focusing on a draft bilateral security agreement that would replace the 1974 disengagement accord on the Golan Heights.
