Syrian Interior Ministry Claims Arrest of Mosque Bombing Suspects

12 January

Syria's Interior Ministry announced the detention of two Islamic State (IS, banned in Russia) militants responsible for the December 26, 2025, bombing of a Shiite mosque in Homs, according to a statement on the ministry's Telegram channel.

Security forces, working with the Main Intelligence Directorate, carried out the operation in Homs province and recovered explosives, weapons, ammunition, and evidence tying the suspects to terrorist activity.

The attack at the Imam Ali mosque in Homs' Wadi al-Zahab district killed eight worshippers and injured more than 20 others during Friday prayers. Authorities said the bomber had planted an explosive device inside the mosque.

Homs, Syria's third-largest city and a major industrial center located 165 km north of Damascus, was home to around 1.8 million people before the 2011 civil war — including significant Christian and Alawite minority communities.
