Tajikistan is ready for any development of the situation on the border with Afghanistan

Tajikistan is ready for any development of the situation on the border with Afghanistan, but at the moment it is calm and under control, a security source told TASS on Wednesday, commenting on the words of Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat, who was appointed by the Taliban (banned in Russia) to head the General Staff.

"The Tajik military is ready for any scenario on the border with Afghanistan," he said. At the same time, the interlocutor added that the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border is under control, and its escalation is unlikely to be allowed. The interlocutor also noted that in case of a threat, the Tajik side will retaliate. In his opinion, the information of the Afghan commander is most likely of a provocative nature.

Earlier, the media reported Fitrat's words about moving Taliban units to northeast Afghanistan "to protect the borders". However, he did not name the country from which he thought the threat might emanate.

Tajikistan has the longest border with Afghanistan among Central Asian countries - 1,344 km - most of which runs along the Panj River, and some through mountainous terrain. Four northeastern provinces of Afghanistan border Tajikistan - Badakhshan, Takhar, Kunduz and Balkh.

The Taliban began a large-scale operation to take control of Afghanistan after the US announced in the spring of this year the decision to withdraw its military forces from there. On August 15, the radicals entered Kabul without a fight and President Ashraf Ghani left the republic. On September 6, the Taliban declared control over the whole territory of Afghanistan, and on September 7, they announced the composition of the provisional government, which was not recognized by any country.
