Sirajuddin Haqqani, Interior Minister in the Taliban-formed Afghan government, met with Russian Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov and Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov, according to Afghan Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Matin Qani.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties between Afghanistan and Russia, as well as regional security, economic cooperation, and trade, Qani wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page.
Haqqani reportedly praised recent actions by Russia concerning Afghanistan, calling them an important step toward acknowledging the current political realities in the country.
Both sides expressed a shared commitment to upgrading diplomatic relations to full embassy level, enhancing bilateral cooperation, and deepening collaboration in trade and security.
Earlier, Taliban Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hafiz Zia Ahmad announced that Afghanistan would soon appoint an ambassador to Russia.
On April 17, the Russian Supreme Court granted a request from the Prosecutor General’s Office to suspend the ban on the Taliban’s activities in Russia.
