Tehran: Any Nuclear Deal with Washington Must Include Sanctions Relief

24 February

The lifting of US sanctions against Iran must be part of any potential agreement to resolve the crisis of Tehran's nuclear program, the official spokesperson for the Republic's Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei said.

"Regarding the elements of any agreement or deal — regardless of the name eventually chosen — it is clear that the core part of such an agreement will be the lifting of sanctions. In exchange, Iran will take steps to guarantee that the Iranian nuclear program is never directed toward militarization," the ministry's press service quoted the diplomat as saying.

According to Baghaei, "these two components are the foundation of any agreement that can be considered and accepted by both sides."

On February 17, a second round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States took place in Geneva through Omani mediation. The Iranian Foreign Ministry reported that a mutual understanding was reached on several issues, the agreements for which could be included in a draft of a future nuclear program accord. Washington stated that the consultations went well, although Tehran is not yet ready to accept a number of positions outlined by the White House. Israel and the US have previously insisted that the Islamic Republic abandon not only its nuclear program development but also its ballistic missile production and support for pro-Iranian forces in the Middle East. According to Reuters, a new round of meetings between Iranian and US delegations is scheduled for February 26 in Geneva.
