The terrorist attacks in Kabul have become a serious challenge to the international security system, there are no guarantees yet that the situation in Afghanistan will stabilize in the near future, Sergei Zheleznyak, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told RIA Novosti.
"Russia is following the ongoing events in Afghanistan with great anxiety. This is a serious challenge for the CSTO countries and the entire international security system. The instability of the situation, the risk of the terrorist threat spreading outside the country, and the mass flight of Afghans - all this must be of serious concern to the international community," Zheleznyak stressed.
The politician noted that "the terrorist attacks in Kabul, unfortunately, may be the beginning of a new wave of terrorism threatening the world," and added that stabilization of the situation will depend on the new Afghan authorities.
"There is no guarantee that the situation in Afghanistan will stabilize anytime soon. Much will depend on how accommodating the new authorities in Kabul prove to be to establish a dialogue with various forces within the country and with other states," the parliamentarian concluded.
Two blasts occurred on Thursday near Kabul Airport, one near a hotel where, according to media, foreigners, including British and US citizens, were gathering. The first blast was reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber, followed by a car bomb attack. The media, citing a statement by IS (banned in the Russian Federation), reported that the group had claimed responsibility for the attack on the airport. According to the latest data, more than 100 people were killed, including 13 US servicemen, whose deaths were confirmed by the Pentagon.
