The ongoing conflict in Ukraine risks becoming a defining political challenge for US President Donald Trump, drawing comparisons to how the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal damaged his predecessor Joe Biden's administration, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
The article states that resolving the conflict is proving “no easy task”, and he risks getting shackled with responsibility — “and potentially blame” — the longer it goes on.
Bloomberg notes, however, that should Trump curtail military aid to Kyiv or soften America's stance against Russia, it might draw accusations that “he didn’t do enough” — mirroring the criticism Biden endured after ordering the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“Trump’s been in charge of US policy for almost six months and the war continues, and now it’s on Trump,” said John Herbst, a former US Ambassador to Ukraine. “He understands that he could get nailed big time if Putin wins on his watch.”
