UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the escalating tensions between Israel and Yemen, expressing grave concern over Israeli airstrikes targeting Yemeni infrastructure.
“The secretary-general condemns the escalation between Israel and Yemen. Today's Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa Airport, Red Sea ports, and Yemen's power plants are of particular concern. Reports indicate significant casualties, including at least three deaths and dozens of injuries,” stated a press release from the UN chief's office on Thursday.
Guterres underscored the urgent need to prevent further escalation in the Middle East and called on all parties to cease hostilities and exercise maximum restraint.
On December 26, Israeli air forces conducted widespread strikes across Yemen, targeting Sanaa International Airport and the key Red Sea ports of Hodeidah and Ras Isa. A major power plant in Ras Katnib was also struck.
According to the Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV, the attacks killed at least four people and injured 16.
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was present at Sanaa Airport during the strikes. He confirmed his safety and stated that he is awaiting repairs at the airport before his flight can depart.
