UN: coronavirus could kill more than 3 million people in Africa

17 April 2020

The new coronavirus could kill between 300,000 and 3.3 million people in African countries, the report of the UN Economic Commission for Africa states.

The number of deaths, according to experts, depends on what measures are taken by the countries of the continent.

The number of infections could reach 122.8 million and 2.3 million people will be hospitalized.

If measures to contain the virus are not taken at all, almost the entire continent will be infected - 1.22 billion people and 22.5 million people will be in hospitals.

Africa in this sense, according to the UN, is particularly vulnerable, since 56% of the urban population of Africa, excluding North African countries, live in overcrowded slums with poor sanitation, and only 34% of Africans have facilities for washing their hands. At the same time, 71% of people in Africa are employed informally and cannot work from home.
