UN: Israeli Humanitarian Aid Mechanism in Gaza Is a “Death Trap”

25 June

The Israeli system for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza has become a deadly trap for civilians, leading to killings, said Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

“This mechanism is a death trap located near Israeli military positions, drawing in large numbers of young people,” Lazzarini told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency. “We’re seeing daily killings as these crowds gather close to the army’s positions.”

He described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as dire, saying: “What we are witnessing is a catastrophic situation—many call it dystopian, even post-apocalyptic. It urgently requires the attention of the international community.”

According to Gaza’s local authorities, about 500 trucks loaded with humanitarian supplies are needed daily to meet the basic needs of the enclave’s population. On May 19, Israel announced it would permit the entry of a minimum amount of food to avert famine.

Meanwhile, on May 18, the Israeli Defense Forces launched military operations in both northern and southern Gaza as part of their large-scale ground campaign “Operation Gideon's Chariots”

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), an international monitoring initiative, reports that approximately 1.95 million Palestinians in Gaza face food insecurity, with over 133,000 suffering from extreme hunger. The IPC warns that due to intensified Israeli military activity and the inability of aid agencies to deliver supplies, “the risk of famine is no longer hypothetical, it is becoming increasingly probable.”
