UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as President of Lebanon and welcomed the resolution of the country’s prolonged presidential crisis.
“The secretary-general congratulates Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Republic of Lebanon. He welcomes this development following more than two years of a presidential vacuum,” stated a press release issued by the UN chief’s office.
Guterres also urged the swift formation of a new government to address the needs of the Lebanese people, emphasizing the importance of ensuring national security and stability, strengthening state authority across Lebanon, and advancing much-needed reforms.
Earlier, on January 9, General Joseph Aoun, commander of the Lebanese Army, won the second round of presidential elections in the parliament and took the oath of office as the country’s new head of state. He is the 14th president of Lebanon since the country gained independence in 1943.
