A joint consultative meeting between the UN Security Council and the African Union Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security in Addis Ababa will be a cornerstone event of Russia's October presidency of the Security Council. Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, announced this during a press conference outlining the Council's program of work.
“The UN Security Council will travel to Addis Ababa to hold its annual joint consultative meeting with members of the African Union's Peace and Security Council on October 16-17,” Nebenzya stated. “Russia is honored to co-lead the Security Council's visit to Addis Ababa with our colleagues from Somalia. It is evident that this trip will be the centerpiece of our presidency.”
The Permanent Representative emphasized that Russia attaches “particular importance” to the engagement with the African Union. He recalled the recent establishment of a new Department for Partnership with Africa within the Russian Foreign Ministry, noting, “This demonstrates our commitment to further strengthening our ties with African friends, with whom we have historically been very close.”
