The UN Security Council will meet again Friday to consider extending the cross-border assistance mechanism in Syria, which expires July 10. Two draft resolutions are on the agenda: one prepared by Russia and the other by Ireland and Norway.
According to a source in the UN Security Council, it is still unclear whether a vote will be held on Friday and on which specific versions of the documents.
According to the diplomat, the Russian draft envisions a six-month continuation of the mechanism, with an extension for the same period if a separate resolution is adopted. "That is, it is not an automatic [extension], but a separate resolution," he explained.
Under Ireland and Norway's initiative, the mandate is extended for one year unless a resolution to the contrary is introduced six months later.
On July 9, 2021, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to extend cross-border assistance in Syria. The document was drafted jointly by Russia, the United States, Ireland and Norway. It extended the operation of the only crossing point "Bab al-Hawa" on the border of Syria and Turkey for 12 months on the condition that in six months the UN Secretary-General will report on the work of the mechanism.
