UNRWA: Children in Gaza Dying from Cold and Lack of Shelter

28 December 2024

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned of a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza as winter cold intensifies and humanitarian aid deliveries dwindle. According to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, children in Gaza are dying due to exposure to freezing temperatures and the absence of adequate shelter.

"We need a ceasefire and an immediate influx of essential supplies, including winter necessities," Lazzarini emphasized in a statement on X. He noted that shipments of blankets, mattresses, and other winter supplies have been stalled for months, awaiting clearance to enter Gaza.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) recently reported that nearly a million Palestinians in Gaza are facing winter without proper shelter. As of late November, only 285,000 displaced Palestinians had received essential materials for rebuilding their homes, leaving over 945,000 still in urgent need of assistance.

Several international organizations continue to report Israeli restrictions on aid deliveries to Gaza. Israeli authorities, however, deny these claims, asserting that they are not obstructing the entry of humanitarian supplies into the enclave.
