Uzbekistan Proposes Regional UN Counterterrorism Office

24 September

Uzbekistan has proposed hosting a regional office for the United Nations Counterterrorism Office on its territory, as part of the country’s work to implement the global counterterrorism strategy. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev made the announcement during the general policy debate at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

“In Central Asia, objective efforts are underway to implement the global counterterrorism strategy. In cooperation with the UN Counterterrorism Office, a regional expert council on rehabilitation and reintegration has been established. We propose to transform this council into an international center of competence, serving as an important platform to share expertise on helping individuals returning from conflict zones adapt to peaceful life. In addition, we are ready to create all necessary conditions for opening a regional office of the UN Counterterrorism Office in Uzbekistan,” Mirziyoyev stated.
