White House: Trump Calls Netanyahu Following IDF Strike on Gaza Church

18 July

US President Donald Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) shelled a church in Gaza, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt announced.

“It was not a positive reaction,” Levitt said when asked about Trump's response to the IDF strike on the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza. “He [Trump] called Prime Minister Netanyahu this morning regarding the strikes on the church,” she stated, describing the incident as “a mistake by the Israelis.” The press secretary added that Netanyahu had explained the situation to the president but provided no further details.

Earlier, Netanyahu expressed deep regret over what he called an “errant projectile” hitting the Gaza church, pledging that Israel would investigate the incident and remained committed to protecting civilians and holy sites. The IDF confirmed the church was struck accidentally by shell fragments.

According to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the strike on Gaza's only Catholic church killed three people and wounded nine, three seriously. The church confirmed that parish priest Gabriel Romanelli was among those lightly injured.
