Zakharova: Russia Expects De-escalation Steps from US-Iran Talks

04 February

Russia expects that the upcoming negotiations between Iranian and American representatives on February 6 will yield concrete steps toward easing bilateral tensions, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said during a press briefing.

"We have always been, and remain, committed to finding solutions exclusively through political and diplomatic channels. Specifically, we hope that during the meeting of high-ranking Iranian and US officials scheduled for Friday, February 6, steps will be taken to resolve the current deadlock and prevent further escalation," Zakharova stated.

The diplomat further cautioned that applying military or forceful pressure on Tehran would not only fail to resolve the underlying issues but could also trigger a wave of instability across the entire Middle East. She expressed Moscow's hope that such a scenario can be avoided.

According to Bloomberg sources, the talks are slated to take place in Turkey. The high-profile attendees reportedly include Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and businessman Jared Kushner. Meanwhile, a broad coalition of regional players, including Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, are intensifying their diplomatic efforts to head off a military confrontation.
