Zakharova: Russia to consider recognition of authorities in Afghanistan once government is formed

02 September 2021

The issue of Russia’s official recognition of the new authorities in Afghanistan will be relevant after the formation of the inclusive government in the country. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, at a briefing on Thursday.

‘We are in favor of the inclusive coalition government in Afghanistan involving all ethnic and political forces in the country, including national minorities. This is the reason why the issue of the official recognition of the authorities will be relevant once this process is completed’, she said.

Zakharova highlighted that Russia had consistently advocated the emergence of Afghanistan as a peaceful, independent and economically prosperous state. According to her, ‘the spontaneous withdrawal from Afghanistan by Western countries could have a negative effect on the well-being of the entire country in a new historical stage’.

‘We are convinced that it is Western countries that decided on the forms of stay [in Afghanistan] and did so in isolation from the mandate of the UN Security Council, without ever reporting to the Council or the international community. It is these countries that are primarily responsible for this move, as well as for everything that was left to Afghanistan, to the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation)’, the diplomat added.
