Federation Council Commits to Further Strengthening Russia's Sovereignty

25 September 2023

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, during the plenary meeting marking the beginning of the fall session, announced that senators will continue to focus on tasks outlined by the President of the Russian Federation. These tasks include bolstering Russia's sovereignty and defense capabilities.

"During the fall session, our primary focus will remain on the objectives outlined by the President. This entails, above all, reinforcing Russia's sovereignty, safeguarding its independence and defense capabilities, and, of course, securing a prosperous and dignified life for our citizens," stated the Federation Council speaker.

Despite facing unprecedented external pressures, "Russia has successfully returned to a growth trajectory." "We have weathered these challenges and have maintained all social commitments to our citizens. As of today, under these new circumstances, the stage of economic recovery for Russia is complete," Matvienko stated.

She mentioned that after the conclusion of the spring session, she had a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which she briefed him on the accomplishments of the Federation Council. In return, President Putin commended the Federation Council's efforts. "We deeply appreciate the President's constant attention and support for the Federation Council," the chairwoman of the upper house of parliament expressed.

Matvienko also emphasized that during the fall session, senators will continue their work in support of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as the participants and veterans of the special military operation, along with their families and loved ones.

"Now, the State Duma is currently reviewing a set of additional bills, which have been developed with the participation of senators, among others. We are hopeful for their swift approval. I would like to remind everyone that the President has described this as a matter of fairness - extending equal rights to all those who defend our Motherland. This includes active-duty military personnel, volunteers, contract soldiers, those who were mobilized, as well as law enforcement officers," she said.
