Lavrov: West is well aware that Crimea is part of Russia

12 August 2021

Western countries are well aware that Crimea is part of Russia and only trying to play along with the current Ukrainian authorities, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters Thursday while answering a question about when Western countries will recognize Crimea's status.

"They are all well aware that Crimea is Russian. And solely to throw us off balance, they are trying to play along with the blatantly racist, neo-Nazi actions and plans of the current Kiev regime," he said.

"If our Western partners have to hide their full awareness of reality behind their desire to play along with these caveman instincts of the current Ukrainian authorities, then I just pity them. They are backing themselves into a corner from which it will be very difficult to crawl out, and they will have to crawl out anyway," Lavrov stressed.

The minister recalled that those who carried out the coup in Ukraine in February 2014 thundered that Russians would never think and speak Ukrainian, and therefore Russians should be expelled from Crimea. "It seemed such a caveman mentality at the time, but no, a couple of weeks ago Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky repeated exactly the same demand," the Russian Foreign Minister said.
