Authorities of Dagestan sent to their homeland over 6.5 thousand citizens of Azerbaijan through a special corridor organized in the region on the Russian-Azerbaijani border, closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. This was announced on Thursday by the first deputy chairman of the government of Dagestan Anatoly Karibov at a meeting of the head of the region Sergey Melikov with the heads of the region's authorities.
"Since May 15, 6,567 citizens from Azerbaijan have been passed through the state border to the territory of Azerbaijan, and 4,436 citizens from Azerbaijan to the territory of the Russian Federation", said Karibov.
According to him, a temporary accommodation point was created in Dagestan on the territory of Derbent district for Azerbaijani citizens waiting to be sent home. "This is a 360-seat camp of the Ministry of Emergency Situations [of Russia], which has been established in Derbent district. At present, there are 345 people. Since June 24 a food point has been working which was [there] deployed by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan", the Deputy prime minister noted.
He informed that for the last two weeks "citizens were not sent to Azerbaijan due to the situation there".
Temporary accommodation point
As TASS reported earlier, near the village of Kullar on the border of Derbent and Magaramkent districts of Dagestan, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations organized a temporary accommodation point for Azerbaijani citizens who could not get to their homeland in time. Citizens of the neighboring country who are in and around a tent camp are sent home in organized groups every week. Another group of 448 Azerbaijani citizens went to their homeland on September 23.
On June 30 Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the idea to leave the field camp of the MES for Azerbaijani citizens in Dagestan for one more month.
