Crimea is the sovereign territory of Russia, and the country, guided by the norms of international law, has the right to do everything necessary to ensure its security there. Thus, Russian president's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reacted on Wednesday to the adoption by the UN General Assembly (GA) of a resolution on Crimea's 'militarization problem', proposed by Ukraine.
"In this case, we are talking about the sovereign territory of the Russian Federation, where Russia is free to do everything necessary to ensure its own security within the framework of international law and international obligations," Peskov said.
On Monday, the UNGA adopted a resolution on the 'problem of militarization' of Crimea and water areas of Azov and Black Seas, proposed by Ukraine. 63 countries voted in support of the document, 17 more voted against and 62 abstained. A rather large number of countries, including Azerbaijan, Lebanon, UAE and Uzbekistan, did not indicate their position at all. Among those who voted against, besides Russia, were Belarus, Armenia, China, Serbia, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, DPRK and Venezuela.
The text of the document, a copy of which is available to TASS, refers to "serious concern over growing militarization of Crimea by the Russian Federation as the occupying state", as well as to "continuing destabilization of the situation in Crimea due to supply of modern weapon systems by the Russian Federation, including planes and missiles, capable to carry nuclear weapons, weapons and ammunition and sending of military personnel to the territory of Ukraine". At that, Dmitry Polyansky, the first deputy representative of Russia to the UN, stressed at the meeting that such initiatives of the Ukrainian side were unpromising.
