Putin Congratulates Russians on Flag Day

22 August 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin has delivered a video message to commemorate National Flag Day, where he hailed the Russian tricolor as a potent symbol of the nation's unity.

"Russia, with its thousand-year history and civilization, finds its essence encapsulated in our state flag – a symbol of our unwavering unity," affirmed the president. He also highlighted that the Russian tricolor, which gained significance as Russia's emblem during the era of Peter the Great, was once again hoisted over the country on August 22, 1991.

"In the face of this flag, we have surmounted numerous trials and tribulations, ultimately restoring our nation's sovereignty," underscored Putin. He expressed a steadfast belief that the national flag will consistently inspire the journey forward, leading to triumph and the continued "celebration of Russia's glory."

On August 22, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) adopted a resolution to officially recognize and employ the historical flag of Russia. This flag featured horizontal stripes of white, azure, and scarlet. The resolution declared this flag to be the official national emblem of the newly formed Russian Federation. In 1993, a decree was issued outlining the National Flag of Russia, wherein the azure color was replaced by blue and the scarlet color was substituted with red. Subsequently, Flag Day was established in 1994 through a decree by Russian President Boris Yeltsin.
