Putin Declares 2024 as the Year of the Family in Russia

22 November 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree declaring the upcoming year in Russia as the "Year of the Family", as announced on the official portal of legal information.

The primary aim of this decision is to promote state policies related to family protection and the preservation of traditional family values. The Government of the Russian Federation has been tasked with forming an organizing committee by December 27 and approving the plan of events for the Year of the Family.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova has been appointed as the chairman of the organizing committee. Additionally, regional authorities have received instructions to assist the Cabinet in implementing various initiatives during the Year of the Family.

The initiative to declare the Year of the Family for the second time and develop a National Strategy of Actions for the Family was set in motion earlier in November by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko.

This move reflects a tradition dating back to 2007, where the president, through decree, designates each upcoming year to a specific theme to draw public attention. Previous designations include the Year of the Family in 2008, the Year of Science and Technology in 2021, the Year of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia in 2022, and the Year of the Teacher and Mentor in 2023.
