Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed the creation of a new national observance — the Day of the Languages of the Peoples of Russia, to be celebrated annually on September 8, the birthday of renowned poet Rasul Gamzatov.
Speaking at a meeting of the Presidential Council on the Russian Language, Putin said:
“I propose establishing the Day of the Languages of the Peoples of Russia and celebrating it every year on September 8 — the birthday of Rasul Gamzatov. The author of the legendary poem ‘Cranes’, Gamzatov considered two languages his own: Avar, in which he wrote, and Russian, through which his works gained global recognition.”
