Russian Muftiate Calls for Preserving Peace Amid Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

12 October 2023

The Religious Board of Muslims (RBM) of the Russian Federation has issued an appeal to participants in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, urging them to cease the bloodshed and violence against civilians. The RBM emphasizes the importance of preventing the conflict from taking on an interreligious dimension. This appeal will be conveyed during Friday prayers in mosques and prayer houses on October 13.

"It is of utmost importance not to inflame this enduring and deeply painful conflict with interreligious dimension. Allah Almighty has ordained that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam coexist in the Holy Land. Similarly, our homeland, Russia, is a place where different religious traditions coexist. It is our duty to safeguard peace within our nation, which includes maintaining fraternal relations among communities of diverse religious backgrounds," reads the appeal published in the RBM's Telegram channel.

The spiritual leadership highlighted that the escalating Palestinian-Israeli conflict has already resulted in thousands of casualties and may lead to a dire humanitarian crisis. The Russian RBM urged all parties to "demonstrate their willingness to cease the bloodshed, end the senseless harm to civilians, halt indiscriminate use of force, and put an end to the collective punishment of civilians." This call is in line with the teachings of the Abrahamic religions and international humanitarian law, the appeal emphasized.

The Russian RBM also underscored that the fundamental cause of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict lies in the "failure to implement UN resolutions on the establishment of a Palestinian state." "Without addressing this discrepancy, this injustice, the conflict will remain unresolved. The Religious Board of Muslims advocates an immediate ceasefire and the reinstatement of the quartet of international mediators to expedite the process of creating a Palestinian state in accordance with UN decisions," the appeal concluded.
