Work on decriminalization of the regions of the North Caucasus continues, such measures are currently carried out on the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia, Russian Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the North Caucasus Federal District Yury Chaika said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

"At the moment a large set of actions on decriminalization in the Karachay-Cherkessia Republic is being carried out. I think the law enforcement authorities will report on the results of this work in the near future," Chaika said.

According to him, similar measures were previously carried out in Dagestan and Ingushetia.

"Joint actions of law enforcement agencies (in Ingushetia - TASS) have suppressed the activities of an ethnic criminal group whose members were involved in committing common crimes, including corruption-related ones, both in the republic and in other constituent entities of the country. In Moscow, the chief of the Center of Counteraction to Extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ingushetia Ibrahim Eljarkiyev and his brother were shot dead. Moreover, 73 crimes were solved in Ingushetia, half of which were grave and particularly grave crimes, 20 crimes of terrorist nature and 142 economic crimes, 37 of which were crimes against corruption," the Representative in the North Caucasus Federal District said, adding that 91 persons were brought to criminal responsibility in Ingushetia and more than 130 million rubles were lost as a result of criminal cases.

Chaika also noted that corruption remains an acute problem in the regions of the North Caucasus.

"The level of corruption is off the charts in some places. Despite the measures taken, the situation still requires close attention. According to the preliminary information, the employees of Regional Public Prosecutor's Offices reveal around 20 thousand violations of legislation on counteraction to corruption, more than 11 thousand acts of prosecutor's response have been made, around 6 thousand officials and legal persons have been brought to disciplinary and administrative responsibility for committing corruption offenses, more than 150 criminal cases have been instigated," he explained.

According to the data of the Plenipotentiary Representative in the North Caucasus Federal District, the total damage from corruption and economic crimes in the completed criminal cases in the North Caucasus amounted to 17 billion rubles.
